Brooks, who exhibited landscapes at the Brooklyn Art Association beginning in 1876, first painted currency about 1887. According to Bruce W. Chambers in Old Money: American Trompe l’Oeil Images of Currency, Brooks’s bills are usually fives or tens and always of the series of 1880, as in this example.

Nicholas Alden Brooks was one of a number of New York artists who specialized in painting trompe l’oeil representations of paper currency during the late nineteenth century. He also exhibited landscapes at the Brooklyn Art Association beginning in 1876. According to Bruce W. Chambers, Brooks’s bills were usually fives or tens and always of the series of 1880.2 Note 1.
