John Durrie, Jr., the elder brother of the noted artist George Henry Durrie (1820-1863), was born in Hartford, Connecticut, where he lived for the majority of his career painting landscapes, still-life subjects, and  portraits. He studied briefly with the engraver and miniature painter Nathaniel Jocelyn (1796-1881) in New Haven in 1839.
