Oil on canvas 23 x 32 inches

Born in Ypres, Belgium, Francois-Antoine Bossuet studied art at the Brussels Academy. This romantic view represents the famous Moorish city Cordova in Andalusia, southern Spain. The monuments reflect the city’s long history and diverse cultural influences: the bridge visible in the distance at the right was originally built by the ancient Romans to span the Rio Guadalquivir; the large structure in the left background is the Alcazar de los Reyes Cristianos that was built by Alfonso XI in the thirteenth century; and the bell tower at the left, rising from the center of the Moorish Great Mosque or Mezquinta, was erected in the early sixteenth century.
