About the Artist

(Hungarian, 1834-1922)

Born in Budapest, the painter Gyorgy Vastagh studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna beginning in 1854. He settled for a time in Kolzsvar (Romania) where he initially focused on portraits, eventually branching out into landscape and the genre subjects for which he is most known. In 1876 he returned to Budapest and set up a portrait studio and for three decades served as the court painter for Archduke Ludwig.
