Late in his career, influenced by his wife (a devout Catholic) and following an intense mystical experience, Dagan turned to religious themes. Spiritual themes reflected Dagnan’s determined turn towards religious revivalism, a genre that obsessed many painters in the 1890s. Dagnan’s spiritual paintings found strong support amidst the atmosphere of Catholic Revival in France.
Le Pain Bénit--meaning the Blessing of the Bread--is a study for the larger work by the same name that currently resides at the Musée d’Orsay in Paris.
