James Peel was born in Newcastle-upon-Tyne, England, and studied under the Northumbrian artist Alexander Dalziel. Peel was active in London and exhibited from1842 to 1894, mostly at the Society of British Artists (renamed the Royal Society of British Artists in 1887), as well as the Royal Academy and the British Institution. He resided in Darlington from 1848 to 1857, when he returned to London. Peel was a prolific painter of the English landscape in oil and watercolor, and the majority of his naturalistic views represent the northeastern counties, the Lake District, and North Wales.
