Herzog achieved success early in his career with his European scenes, however he is most critically acclaimed for his American landscapes.  He immigrated to the United States around 1870 before settling in Philadelphia where his landscapes had already been exhibited at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts since 1863.  He traveled throughout Pennsylvania and across the country to record scenes of the Hudson River, Atlantic City, Lake George, along the Maryland’s Eastern Shore and Chesapeake Bay, New Hampshire, Niagara Falls, Maine and Florida. He also travelled to the far west to Wyoming, Salt Lake City, Utah, Oregon, Yosemite Valley, CA, creating works depicting the American natural landscape.
