The landscape painter Frederick De Bourg Richards was born in Wilmington, Delaware, and lived in New York City from 1844 to 1845. He settled in Philadelphia around 1848 and spent the remainder of his career in the city. He exhibited at the National Academy of Design, the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, and the Brooklyn Art Association.
Richards maintained a studio in Anglesea, a town on the New Jersey shoreline, about one hour south of Atlantic City, while painting views of the Pennsylvania countryside and the New Jersey seashore.
