The pioneer American modernist Hugh Henry Breckenridge was born in Leesburg, Virginia. He entered the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts in 1887 and studied at the Académie Julian in Paris in 1892. Breckenridge's landscape, marine, and still life subjects reflect the influence of French modernism and earned him a prominent place among the "Pennsylvania Academy moderns" He exhibited widely and won many awards. By the mid-1920s he had begun to produce highly expressive nonrepresentational works. He was especially well known as an influential teacher at the Pennsylvania Academy, the School of Painting in Darby, and the Breckenridge School in Gloucester, Massachusetts.
