Title: Samuel Cunningham

Description: The still life, portrait and miniature painter Raphaelle Peale was born in Annapolis, Maryland, the son of Charles Willson Peale (1741-1827). He began working in the elder Peale's Philadelphia museum during the 1790s, eventually becoming his chief assistant. After a brief trip to England in 1802 he earned a good living as an itinerant cutting profile portraits and painting miniatures. Despite his father's objections, around 1811 Peale turned to still life subjects that brought him little commercial success. Peale's chronic alcoholism and depression greatly hindered his career, and he died in Philadelphia.
