This painting by an unknown and probably Italian artist represents one of Rome’s most famous landmarks, the Arch of Titus, located on the Via Sacra just south-east of the Roman Forum. The triumphal arch was constructed by the emperor Domitian shortly after the death of his brother Titus to commemorate the capture and sack of Jerusalem in 70 A.D., the culminating event of the Jewish War.
