The etcher Ernest David Roth was born in Stuttgart, Germany, and settled in New York City where he studied etching at the National Academy of Design with James D. Smillie (1833-1909). He exhibited widely throughout the United States and won a number of prestigious awards.
This rare oil painting by the artist represents Bass Rocks, one of the landmarks near the art colony Gloucester on Cape Ann, Massachusetts, a popular subject for the many artists who frequented the area.
