The romantic landscape painter Henry A. Ferguson was born in Glens Falls, New York, and studied in Albany during the late 1860s with Homer Dodge Martin (1836-1897) and George H. Boughton (1833-1905). He traveled widely throughout South and Middle America, Europe, and North Africa. In the United States he was active in the Hudson River Valley, the Berkshire Mountains in Massachusetts, and the White Mountains in New Hampshire. He was elected an associate member of the National Academy of Design in 1884, and exhibited there from 1867 to 1900. He was also exhibited at the Century Association, the Brooklyn Art Association, the Boston Art Club, the Art Institute of Chicago, and the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts.
