This scene, on the Venetian Island of Chioggia, depicts a balustrade of marble from the Praetorian Palace and features a statue of Madonna and Child crowned by a dome of gilded copper. Once upon a time the statue was situated on the steps of the city’s old palazzo. This piece was executed during Otto Henry Bacher’s two-year stay in Venice in 1882-84. Erica Hirshler’s description of the artist’s work in The Lure of Italy: American Artists and the Italian Experience, 1760-1914 ([Boston: Museum of Fine Arts, 1992], p. 397) could aptly be applied to the painting illustrated here: “Bacher’s diligent attention to architectural details, his somewhat blanched colors, and his academic approach ally his efforts with an international circle of artists active in Venice at this time.”
