Born in Philadelphia, John Frederick Peto trained at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts from 1877 to 1878, where he befriended William Michael Harnett (1848-1892) whose work influenced him deeply. Peto worked in Philadelphia and exhibited at the academy from 1879 to 1887. He also worked as a photographer and sculptor. Peto ceased to exhibit after he moved to Island Heights, New Jersey, in 1889, and gradually sank into obscurity.
This painting, which retains its original frame, is an outstanding example of Peto's small still-life compositions.
