Artist: Nicolino Calyo
Title: Manayunk
Year: c. 1835
Media: Watercolor and gouache on paper, 17 3/4 x 24 inches
Provenance:
Description: Nicolino Vicompte Calyo was born in Naples, Italy, where he studied art. After living in Malta he immigrated to the United States and settled in Baltimore around 1834. Late the following year he settled in New York City where he was noted for painting panoramas and dioramas. Around 1850 Calyo went to Spain, but he returned to the United States in 1874 and presumably resumed living in New York.

This view of Manayunk, an industrial town above Philadelphia on the Schuylkill River, is typical of Calyo's topographically accurate panoramic landscape compositions done in the Neopolitan watercolor style.
