Eugenio Lucas Y Padilla, also known as Eugenio Lucas Velazquez, was a Spanish romantic painter, believed to have been born in Alcalá de Henares a historical city about 22 miles from Madrid.

He studied at the Academy of Fine Arts of San Fernando and traveled throughout Italy and Morocco, also visiting Paris with the landscape painter Jenaro Pérez Villamil. Padilla had a son with Villamil’s sister, the painter Eugenio Lucas Villamil whose paintings maintain the influence and characteristics of his father.

Padilla left the neoclassicism of his teachers to admire painters like Velázquez and Goya and cultivated genre painting and fantastic and sinister scenes, but also landscapes and portraits.
