One of Philadelphia's best known landmarks from the Colonial era, Old Christ Church was founded in 1695, the first parish of the Church of England (Anglican) in Pennsylvania. Located on the northwest corner of North Second and Church Streets, the present structure was designed by Dr. John Kearsley and built between 1727 and 1744; the steeple dates from the early 1750s. It is an outstanding example of Palladian church architecture that reflects the influence of Sir Christopher Wren's London city churches. Many prominent leaders of the American Revolution worshipped at Christ Church, and Benjamin Franklin is buried in its cemetery. This view represents the church's east end, with its famous Palladian window.
