The landscape watercolorist Peter Caledon Cameron was born in England. He studied art at the National Art Training School (known since 1896 as the Royal College of Art) in London and was certified a drawing master in 1883. The majority of Cameron's surviving works are large, meticulously detailed watercolor landscapes of Philadelphia and the South Jersey Shore area. He was an eccentric perfectionist who was deeply concerned with making as literal a transcription of nature as possible and thus always painted directly from his subjects.
