Rebekah Evens Roberts—only the second woman to be admitted to the Bar Association in Philadelphia—was born in New Jersey, the daughter of active members of the Religious Society of Friends. She exhibited at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts between 1887 and 1890 and this work may well be the painting entitled Study of Vegetables from the Academy's Fifty-Eighth Annual Exhibition in 1888 (no. 282). In 1892, Roberts married her art teacher, Milne Ramsey (1847–1915).
