The impressionist still-life and landscape painter Ernest Quost was born in Avallon in central France, and studied with the Danish porcelain decorator Horace-Henri-Philippe Aumont (1839–1864). He first exhibited at the Paris Salon in 1866, and joined the Société des Artistes Français in 1887. Quost was an accomplished painter who won five medals at the annual Exposition Universelle exhibitions between 1880 and 1900. He was made a chevalier of the French Legion of Honor in 1883, and became an officer of that organization in 1903. His work is represented in a number of French museums.
