Charles Lewis Fussell - September 2007

painting

Charles Lewis Fussell
(American, 1840–1909)
Meeting on a Country Lane
Watercolor on cardboard, 10 1/4 ◊ 9 1/4 inches
RS 2460

The format, design, and precise drawing of this watercolor suggests that it was intended as a magazine or book illustration. The diminutive figures set under towering trees with abundant foliage relate it to the airbrushed ink sketch Couple Strolling along a Rural Lane, and a watercolor called Summer Afternoon that recently appeared on the market.1
