Silver, 12 1/4 inches high
Stamped on bottom: “IG&CO” in a rectangle

John Green & Company was founded in 1799 when Green and his partners bought the shop of J. Parsons & Company located on Market Street in Sheffield, England. The fluted stems and urns on this pair of George III–style silver candlesticks reflect the influence of the classical revival style that was in vogue in England during the early nineteenth century. The lion surrounded by spears and bearing an axe, engraved on both the base and the top of each candlestick, may be the original owner’s crest.
