Fire Mark

Teutonia Insurance Company Fire Mark, c. 1870
Tin, 3 3/4 x 6 7/8 inches

RS 6393

A historian has noted that “the decade of Dayton’s financial history from 1860 to 1870 witnessed the organization of more fire insurance companies than any other city of the United States.”1 The Teutonia Insurance Company was founded in Dayton, Ohio, in 1865 and was in business until 1918. It was one of the most successful companies ever organized in the city. The second example listed above is the third issue of the company’s mark.
