Pair of Fire Buckets, 1839
Leather, 12 3/4 × 8 3/4 inches
Maker’s mark stamped on the bottom
References: Garvan and Wojtowicz 1977, 116.
RS 6316

The painted inscription indicates that this rare pair of hand-sewn leather fire buckets was acquired in 1839 by John Dodge, who lived in Philadelphia on Coates Street. The tall and narrow shape of these buckets, as well as their minimal decoration, is typical of the type used at this time.
