Fire Bucket, c. 1775–1800
Leather, 11 3/8 × 8 5/8 inches
References: Garvan and Wojtowicz 1977, 114, illus.
RS 6405

This bucket was originally painted black and later decorated with gold paint and inscribed “J. March” and “1792.” The painted image at the top represents the mythological deity Neptune driving a chariot drawn by two horses. A similar emblem was used on the hats of members of the Neptune Company beginning in 1805. The name of the owner “J. March” does not appear in Philadelphia census records or city directories around this time, so he may have come into possession of the bucket later and added his name.
