Fire Mark

Deutsche Versicherung Fire Mark
Tin, 3 3/8 x 8 3/8 inches

RS 6397

This mark was used by the German Mutual Insurance Company (Die Deutsche Gegenseitige Versicherungs Gesellschaft) of Cincinnati, Ohio, that was founded by Heinrich Armin Rattermann in 1856 but not opened until 1858. Because of anti-German sentiment during World War I the company changed its name to the Hamilton Fire Insurance Company (it is now called the Hamilton Mutual Insurance Company), and all German-language signage was changed to English as of July 10, 1918. This mark was removed from a house in Cincinnati.
