Nicolay T. Johnson
(American, nineteenth century)
Flowers in a Glass, 1865

Oil on prepared board, 12 1/4 × 10 1/4 inches
Signed, dated, and inscribed at lower center: “N. T. Johnson. S. Fr. 1865.”
Provenance: (probably) Paul Magreil, New York; Mrs. Norman B. Woolworth, New York

Only the barest outline of Nicolay T. Johnson’s biography can be gleaned from exhibition catalogues from the 1860s and 1870s, when he lived in San Francisco, exhibiting at the California Art Union and the San Francisco Mechanics’ Union. Titles indicate that he showed figure pieces, still lifes, and landscapes.
