Name: Ethan Allen Greenwood
Dates: (1779 - 1856)
Nationality: American
Biography: Ethan Allen Greenwood studied painting with Edward Savage (1761-1817) in New York and later took over the management of the Columbian Museum in Boston from his former teacher. In addition to painting portraits, Greenwood taught school and studied law before opening a studio in Boston in 1812. Many of the portraits he painted there are today in museums and historical societies throughout New England; the Worcester Art Museum owns a self-portrait. After his father’s death in 1827, Greenwood returned to his native Hubbardstown, Massachusetts, where he was active in politics.
