Nelson Norris Bickford studied with the German-born painter Henri Lehmann at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Paris, and at the Academie Julian. From 1905 to 1931, Bickford worked as a guard in the sculpture galleries at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, in New York City, where he developed a personal interst in working with sculpture.
Bickford was a frequent exhibitor at the National Academy of Design and the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts. He was most known for his sculptures and paintings of animal subjects.
