Jane Stuart, the youngest child of Gilbert Stuart, was not instructed by her father because he felt she should succeed by her own merits. She exhibited at the Boston Athenaeum sporadically form 1827 to 1870. She specialized in portraits and was known to have completed a portrait of John Adams that was begun by her father. She was also known to have copied a portrait of Washington at Dorchester Heights done by her father.
